アメリカのカリフォルニア州、コスタメサ公立高校に交換留学中の石原悠人君より、先月アメリカで開催されたWBCワールド・ベースボール・クラッシックの時の現地の様子がメールで知らされてきました。
今回のWBC大会には、アメリカ代表チームにメジャーの有名選手であるキンズラー、ジョーンズ、イエリチ、スタントンやロアーク選手などが参加したので、米国現地では大きく報道されたそうです。特にカリフォルニア州では、ドジャース、SFジャイアンツ、エンジェルズなどの大リーグチームのシーズン前哨戦となる世界大会という扱いで、テレビでも全試合が中継されたとのことす。アメリカ高校交換留学生の石原君も滞在先のホストファミリーと一緒にテレビで熱心に観戦して日本代表チームを応援したとか。
3月23日の決勝戦の、プエルトリコ対アメリカのゲームまで、日本を含めて世界の野球ファンをわかせたWBCワールド・ベースボール・クラッシックですが、結局日本は3月22日の準決勝に、アメリカ代表チームに惜しくも敗れてベスト４で今大会は終わりました。
とはいえ、アメリカ代表チームが優勝したことは「野球の母国で開催された世界大会」として意義のあることでした。広島カープからは、菊池選手、田中選手、鈴木選手が参加していたので広島から参加した留学生たち全員で、精一杯応援したそうです。

 

先月20日、トランプ氏がアメリカの大統領に就任しました。アメリカのワシントンＤ.Ｃ.での大統領就任式の模様は、全世界に実況で中継されました。
その時のトランプ氏の就任スピーチは、誰にでも分かりやすいものでした。恐らく、日本人の高校生、大学生、社会人の方でも、英検準１級レベルの英語力が有れば、この演説のほとんどの内容を理解できたのではないかと思います。改めて、その英文スピーチをこのウェブ・ページに残したいと思います。
大統領就任後に、多くの話題を提供し続けるトランプ大統領。これからの世界は彼の手の中でどのように変わっていくのでしょうか。同時に、日本の若者のアメリカとの文化交流などのプログラムはどのように変わっていくのでしょうか。これからも世界が平和であり、若者が自由に語り合い、発展し続ける安定した社会であることを願っています。

Chief Justice Roberts, President Carter, President Clinton, President Bush, President Obama, fellow Americans and people of the world, thank you.
We, the citizens of America, are now joined in a great national effort to rebuild our country and restore its promise for all of our people.
Together, we will determine the course of America and the world for many, many years to come. We will face challenges, we will confront hardships, but we will get the job done.
Every four years, we gather on these steps to carry out the orderly and peaceful transfer of power, and we are grateful to President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama for their gracious aid throughout this transition. They have been magnificent. Thank you.
Today’s ceremony, however, has very special meaning because today, we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another or from one party to another, but we are transferring power from Washington, D.C. and giving it back to you, the people.
For too long, a small group in our nation’s capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost. Washington flourished, but the people did not share in its wealth. Politicians prospered, but the jobs left and the factories closed. The establishment protected itself, but not the citizens of our country. Their victories have not been your victories. Their triumphs have not been your triumphs. And while they celebrated in our nation’s capital, there was little to celebrate for struggling families all across our land.
That all changes starting right here and right now because this moment is your moment, it belongs to you.
It belongs to everyone gathered here today and everyone watching all across America. This is your day. This is your celebration. And this, the United States of America, is your country.
What truly matters is not which party controls our government, but whether our government is controlled by the people.
January 20th, 2017 will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again.
The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer.
Everyone is listening to you now. You came by the tens of millions to become part of a historic movement, the likes of which the world has never seen before.
At the center of this movement is a crucial conviction, that a nation exists to serve its citizens. Americans want great schools for their children, safe neighborhoods for their families, and good jobs for themselves. These are just and reasonable demands of righteous people and a righteous public.
But for too many of our citizens, a different reality exists: mothers and children trapped in poverty in our inner cities; rusted out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our nation; an education system flush with cash, but which leaves our young and beautiful students deprived of all knowledge; and the crime and the gangs and the drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealized potential.
This American carnage stops right here and stops right now.
We are one nation and their pain is our pain. Their dreams are our dreams. And their success will be our success. We share one heart, one home, and one glorious destiny. The oath of office I take today is an oath of allegiance to all Americans.
For many decades, we’ve enriched foreign industry at the expense of American industry; subsidized the armies of other countries, while allowing for the very sad depletion of our military. We’ve defended other nations’ borders while refusing to defend our own.
And spent trillions and trillions of dollars overseas while America’s infrastructure has fallen into disrepair and decay. We’ve made other countries rich, while the wealth, strength and confidence of our country has dissipated over the horizon.
One by one, the factories shuttered and left our shores, with not even a thought about the millions and millions of American workers that were left behind. The wealth of our middle class has been ripped from their homes and then redistributed all across the world.
But that is the past. And now, we are looking only to the future.
We assembled here today are issuing a new decree to be heard in every city, in every foreign capital, and in every hall of power. From this day forward, a new vision will govern our land. From this day forward, it’s going to be only America first, America first.
Every decision on trade, on taxes, on immigration, on foreign affairs will be made to benefit American workers and American families. We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies and destroying our jobs.
Protection will lead to great prosperity and strength. I will fight for you with every breath in my body and I will never ever let you down.
America will start winning again, winning like never before.
We will bring back our jobs. We will bring back our borders. We will bring back our wealth. And we will bring back our dreams.
We will build new roads and highways and bridges and airports and tunnels and railways all across our wonderful nation. We will get our people off of welfare and back to work, rebuilding our country with American hands and American labor.
We will follow two simple rules; buy American and hire American.
We will seek friendship and goodwill with the nations of the world, but we do so with the understanding that it is the right of all nations to put their own interests first. We do not seek to impose our way of life on anyone, but rather to let it shine as an example. We will shine for everyone to follow.
We will reinforce old alliances and form new ones and unite the civilized world against radical Islamic terrorism, which we will eradicate from the face of the Earth.
At the bedrock of our politics will be a total allegiance to the United States of America, and through our loyalty to our country, we will rediscover our loyalty to each other. When you open your heart to patriotism, there is no room for prejudice.
The Bible tells us how good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity. We must speak our minds openly, debate our disagreements honestly, but always pursue solidarity. When America is united, America is totally unstoppable.
There should be no fear. We are protected and we will always be protected. We will be protected by the great men and women of our military and law enforcement. And most importantly, we will be protected by God.
Finally, we must think big and dream even bigger. In America, we understand that a nation is only living as long as it is striving. We will no longer accept politicians who are all talk and no action, constantly complaining, but never doing anything about it.
The time for empty talk is over. Now arrives the hour of action.
Do not allow anyone to tell you that it cannot be done. No challenge can match the heart and fight and spirit of America. We will not fail. Our country will thrive and prosper again.
We stand at the birth of a new millennium, ready to unlock the mysteries of space, to free the earth from the miseries of disease, and to harness the energies, industries and technologies of tomorrow. A new national pride will stir ourselves, lift our sights and heal our divisions.
It’s time to remember that old wisdom our soldiers will never forget, that whether we are black or brown or white, we all bleed the same red blood of patriots.
We all enjoy the same glorious freedoms and we all salute the same great American flag.
And whether a child is born in the urban sprawl of Detroit or the wind-swept plains of Nebraska, they look up at the same night sky, they will their heart with the same dreams, and they are infused with the breath of life by the same almighty creator.
So to all Americans in every city near and far, small and large, from mountain to mountain, from ocean to ocean, hear these words: You will never be ignored again.
Your voice, your hopes, and your dreams will define our American destiny. And your courage and goodness and love will forever guide us along the way.
Together, we will make America strong again. We will make America wealthy again. We will make America proud again. We will make America safe again. And yes, together we will make America great again.

2017年が明けました。皆様、あけまして、おめでとうございます。
2016年の年の瀬はせわしく過ぎて大晦日が終わり、2017年元日を迎えると、本当にせわしく毎日が過ぎていきます。１月２日は帰省からのＵターンのラッシュがピークを迎えまました。そして１月４日には官庁や企業の仕事始め、５日には平常通りの毎日がスタートします。学校も６日から新学期を迎えます。
そんな中で、テレビやYahooニュースで知らされるのは「海外のテロのニュース」です。ISイスラミック・ステイトによるものと思われる破壊活動は昨年12月にはトルコの首都アンカラで発生して多くの犠牲者を出し、年が変わってはイラクでの自爆テロとして続いています。
不安定な中東情勢を心配しながらも、日本の、そして身の回りの平和な毎日を祈ります。今年、海外留学を目指す方々は、めまぐるしく変わっている外国の世相を肌で感じながら、海外の生活を自分自身で安全に過ごす方法を画策して、その術を身に付けないといけない時代になりました。危険を回避しながら日本と違う価値観や文化を身に付けて日本に帰国して留学を完結するという目的を忘れてはいけません。それは、中学や高校留学のプログラムに参加する十代の若者にもあてはまることです。保護者から離れて暮らす外国の日常では、自分の行動に責任を持つ覚悟が必要です。今年１年が皆さまにとって素晴らしい年であることをお祈りします。

大学の入試改革が進んでいます。今回は、国語の試験について受験生に記述問題を課すという方針が国大協によって協議され、決定されたとの報道です。この方針は、大学入試全体に影響を及ぼすもので、当然英語の入学試験にも当てはまるものなので注視していきたいと思います。
対策として、普段から自分の意見を持ち、それを積極的に表現すること。その表現を可能にする広い知識と、基礎力である言語能力をマスターすることが大切です。

広島市にある、広島県立高校から留学生として参加しているミネソタ州の橘有紀（仮名・高校２年生）さんから、トランプさんが、大統領に当選したときの勝利宣言の演説の内容が知らされてきました。アメリカでは（日本でも11月9日から10日にかけて)テレビで繰り返しそのシーンが放送されたそうです。この時のトランプさんの英語での演説全文を、CNNのニュースから以下にコピーしました。スピーチの内容は、本当にすばらしいものだと思います。
トランプさんは、今回の大統領選挙期間中の演説では台本が用意されていたとしても、どちらかといえばアドリブ的な話のながれが多く、「イスラム教の信者はアメリカに来るな」「メキシコや南米系の不正移民は出て行け」「メキシコとアメリカ国境に塀を造る」などという過激な話がひとつの「ウリ」だったのですが、勝利宣言のスピーチでは、神妙な面持ちでカンペをしっかり読み上げたので、内容のある演説となりました。トランプさんは、この時は慎重に対応されたのだろうと、広島から参加された高校生留学参加者の橘さんが話していました。
趣旨としては、選挙でクリントンさんを応援した人々を含めて、全ての国民に団結して、一緒にアメリカを良くしていこうというものでした。あまりにも、まともな内容だったので驚いた方もおられるのではないかと思います。来年の１月の正式な大統領就任時には、すばらしい演説をされるものとトランプ新大統領に期待しています。

Friends, delegates and fellow Americans: I humbly and gratefully accept your nomination for the presidency of the United States.
Who would have believed that when we started this journey on June 16th of last year, we – and I say we because we are a team – would have received almost 14 million votes, the most in the history of the Republican Party, and that the Republican Party would get 60 percent more votes than it received eight years ago. Who would have believed this? Who would have believed this? The Democrats, on the other hand, received 20 percent fewer votes than they got four years ago. Not so good. Not so good.
Together, we will lead our party back to the White House, and we will lead our country back to safety, prosperity, and peace. We will be a country of generosity and warmth. But we will also be a country of law and order.
Our Convention occurs at a moment of crisis for our nation. The attacks on our police, and the terrorism in our cities, threaten our very way of life. Any politician who does not grasp this danger is not fit to lead our country.
Americans watching this address tonight have seen the recent images of violence in our streets and the chaos in our communities. Many have witnessed this violence personally; some have even been its victims.
I have a message for all of you: the crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon, and I mean very soon, come to an end. Beginning on January 20th 2017, safety will be restored.
The most basic duty of government is to defend the lives of its own citizens. Any government that fails to do so is a government unworthy to lead.
It is finally time for a straightforward assessment of the state of our nation.
I will present the facts plainly and honestly. We cannot afford to be so politically correct anymore.
So if you want to hear the corporate spin, the carefully-crafted lies, and the media myths the Democrats are holding their convention next week. Go there.
But here, at our convention, there will be no lies. We will honor the American people with the truth, and nothing else.
These are the facts:
Decades of progress made in bringing down crime are now being reversed by this Administration’s rollback of criminal enforcement.
Homicides last year increased by 17% in America’s fifty largest cities. That’s the largest increase in 25 years. In our nation’s capital, killings have risen by 50 percent. They are up nearly 60% in nearby Baltimore.
In the President’s hometown of Chicago, more than 2,000 people have been the victims of shootings this year alone. And almost 4,000 have been killed in the Chicago area since he took office.
The number of police officers killed in the line of duty has risen by almost 50% compared to this point last year. Nearly 180,000 illegal immigrants with criminal records, ordered deported from our country, are tonight roaming free to threaten peaceful citizens.
The number of new illegal immigrant families who have crossed the border so far this year already exceeds the entire total from 2015. They are being released by the tens of thousands into our communities with no regard for the impact on public safety or resources.
One such border-crosser was released and made his way to Nebraska. There, he ended the life of an innocent young girl named Sarah Root. She was 21 years-old, and was killed the day after graduating from college with a 4.0 Grade Point Average, number one in her class. Her killer was then released a second time, and he is now a fugitive from the law.
I’ve met Sarah’s beautiful family. But to this Administration, their amazing daughter was just one more American life that wasn’t worth protecting. No more. One more child to sacrifice on the altar of open borders.
What about our economy?
Again, I will tell you the plain facts that have been edited out of your nightly news and your morning newspaper: Nearly Four in 10 African-American children are living in poverty, while 58% of African-American youth are now not employed. 2 million more Latinos are in poverty today than when President Obama took his oath of office less than eight years ago. Another 14 million people have left the workforce entirely.
Household incomes are down more than 4 thousand dollars since the year 2000. That’s 16 years ago. Our trade deficit in goods reached nearly, think of this, think of this, our trade deficit is 800 billion dollars, think of that, 800 billion dollars last year alone. We’re going to fix that.
The budget is no better. President Obama has almost doubled our national debt to more than 19 trillion dollars, and growing. And yet, what do we have to show for it? Our roads and bridges are falling apart, our airports are in Third World condition, and forty-three million Americans are on food stamps.

An amendment, pushed by Lyndon Johnson, many years ago, threatens religious institutions with a loss of their tax-exempt status if they openly advocate their political views. Their voice is taken away.I am going to work very hard to repeal that language and to protect free speech for all Americans.
We can accomplish these great things, and so much more – all we need to do is start believing in ourselves and in our country again. Start believing. It is time to show the whole world that America Is Back – bigger, and better and stronger than ever before.
In this journey, I’m so lucky to have at my side my wife Melania and my wonderful children, Don, Ivanka, Eric, Tiffany, and Barron: you will always be my greatest source of pride and joy. And by the way, Melania and Ivanka, did they do a job? My Dad, Fred Trump, was the smartest and hardest working man I ever knew. I wonder sometimes what he’d say if he were here to see this and to see me tonight.
It’s because of him that I learned, from my youngest age, to respect the dignity of work and the dignity of working people. He was a guy most comfortable in the company of bricklayers, and carpenters, and electricians and I have a lot of that in me also. I love those people.
Then there’s my mother, Mary. She was strong, but also warm and fairminded. She was a truly great mother. She was also one of the most honest and charitable people that I have ever known, and a great, great judge of character. She could pick them out from anywhere.
To my sisters Mary Anne and Elizabeth, my brother Robert and my late brother Fred, I will always give you my love—you are most special to me. I have had a truly great life in business.
But now, my sole and exclusive mission is to go to work for our country – to go to work for you. It’s time to deliver a victory for the American people. We don’t win any more, but we are going to start winning again.
But to do that, we must break free from the petty politics of the past. America is a nation of believers, dreamers, and strivers that is being led by a group of censors, critics and cynics.
Remember: all of the people telling you that you can’t have the country you want, are the same people that wouldn’t stand, I mean they said Trump does not have a chance of being here tonight, not a chance, the same people. We love defeating those people, don’t we? Love it.
No longer can we rely on those same people in the media, and politics, who will say anything to keep our rigged system in place. Instead, we must choose to believe In America. History is watching us now.

今月8日、お笑いコンビ「ピース」の綾部祐二（38）が緊急会見を開き、来年4月から活動の拠点を米ニューヨークに移し、ハリウッド俳優を目指すことを発表した。一部報道では約4000万円の年収を捨てて、異国の地でゼロからスタートするという。夢に向かって挑戦するその姿勢には、「羨ましい」、「カッコイイ」と賛同する声もある一方で、英語も話せず、現地で何をするのかも決まってないという、その無計画さに「勘違いしているのでは？」「無謀すぎる！」といった厳しい声もインターネット上では飛んでいる。

さて、ここで疑問がわいてきました。綾部さんは『英会話はできるのか、英語を理解できるのか』ということ。そして『アメリカの労働ビザを簡単に取れるのか』ということです。
確かに英語が喋れないというのは、さほど外国生活で大きな問題ではなく、芸能に生きる人はチャレンジする度胸の方が重要と思われます。今までハリウッドや、ブロードウェイを目指して成功した人たちの中には、アメリカに行ってから一から英語を学習して英会話を覚えた人もいます。例えばアーノルド・シュワルツネッガーさんも、オーストリアからの移住者でアメリカで英語をマスターしてボデイビルダーのトレーニングを積んだ後に俳優、政治家としてアメリカンドリームを獲得しています。日本人では、アメリカでＭＣとして成功したコメディアンの神田瀧夢さんなど、他にも同様の例はいくらでも見つかるようです。
しかし、アメリカのコメディやコントは日本と全く質が違う『言葉プレイ』や『パンチライン』と呼ばれる落としどころやギャグ、笑い内容を理解するのに、高度な英語力が必要になります。舞台で話すピン芸人のことをスタンド・アップ・コメデイアンとアメリカでは呼ぶのですが、その人独特の個性が強く求められています。例えば、下品ネタ早口喋りのエデイ・マーフイさん、早口でウイットネタのジエイ・レノさん、ニュースショーの時事ネタに出演して笑わせるコナン・オブライエンさんなど、日本と全く異質の笑いを追求しています。
とはいえ、若くて、いかにも日本的ハンサム・ボーイの綾部さんが、英語・英会話を身に付けて日本の不思議文化を武器に独自の個性を押し出した芸風を確立して、アメリカで大成功して欲しいと思います。

エース留学センターには、フロリダのオーランドから来日して、留学生の穎悟指導を行う英語講師、シンデイ先生が在籍しています。この先生は、とにかくフロリダ・マーリンズのファンで毎日イチロー選手の活躍をネットで確認、シンディ先生のロッカールームはイチローの写真と新聞雑誌の記事だらけです。
そのアメリカ・メジャーリーグ、フロリダ・マーリンズのイチロー選手が、デンバーで開催されたロッキーズ戦でメジャーリーグ史上で三一人目となる三千本安打を８月７日に達成しました。この日は第４打席で右越えの三塁打を放って、本人がメジャーリーグへ移籍して１６年、そこで２４５２回目となるゲームでこれを成し遂げたことはすごいことです。試合は、ロッキーズ７－１０マーリンズでした。
ファンはイチローをスタンディグオベーションで祝福しました。マーリンズのベンチからは、仲間が走ってきてハグをしたので、イチロー選手は感激の涙を流しました。「達成した瞬間チームメイトが喜んでくれて嬉しいです。三千本ということより、ファンの皆さんが喜んでくれることが大切なことです。」と話しました。イチロー選手でも、緊張からか７月２８日のカージナルス戦で２９９９本目の安打を打った後で、しばらく無安打が続き、本当に苦労の末の三千本安打となりました。
「振り返るってみると、日本のオリックス入団の選手時代からの長い時間、そう、特別な時間が僕へのプレゼントです。この時間の使われ方はよかった。」と振り返りました。同時に、阪急ブレーブス時代の福元選手の三塁打の日本プロ野球の記録も塗り替えたとのことです。すばらしい記録、おめでとうございます。

 

２０１６年７月２３日、広島カープの黒田選手が日米通算２００勝を達成しました。マツダスタジアムを赤く染めた広島のファンが待ちわびていて記録です。
この日は、留学コースの生徒さんがメンバーをつとめる「黒田選手を応援する八丁堀会」グループも、マツダ・スタジアムの広島阪神戦に出かけました。この試合では、前半に広島カープが得点をしたので、余裕を持って観戦できたそうです。
黒田選手は「本当にホッとしています。いつもファンの人に声援で背中を押されて、本当に心が折れそうな時でもマウンドに行く気持ちを常に持たせてもらって、本当に感謝しています」とインタビューに答えていました。
４１歳のという年齢で、プロスポーツの世界で活躍するのは凄いことで、普段からの管理の成せる技だと思います。黒田選手は会見で「こういう日を迎えられると思ってなかった。本当にうれしく思います。自分自身でも実感がわかないというか、本当にそこまで勝ったのかなという気持ちです。日本に限らず、アメリカのチームメートとか数多くのサポートがあってここまで来られたと思っています」と、感謝の言葉を述べています。
黒田選手の座右の銘は「雪に耐えて梅花麗し＝苦しまずに栄光なし。泥と汗にまみれながら、自分自身と向き合い、努力を重ねる。」
これから海外の高校留学に参加をされる皆さんに、ぜひ贈りたい言葉です。

広島の平和記念公園で行ったスピーチを執筆したのは、ホワイトハウスのローズ大統領副補佐官が務めたといわれています。しかし、これを否定するように、ローズ福補佐官は５月３１日に自身のブログで、オバマ大統領による手書きスピーチ原稿の写真を公開して、大統領自身が広島でのスピーチ原稿を書いたことを強調しました。
ローズ氏によると、今回のサミット直前に訪問したベトナムで、オバマ大統領はこのスピーチ原稿に何度も手を入れていたと明かしています。ホワイトハウスの当初のアナウンスではは短い内容で所感を述べるにとどめると発表されていましたが、実際には１７分間の長いスピーチになっていました。「被爆地を訪れた最初のアメリカ大統領として、核兵器のない世界と平和構築への道について話すことができた」と文章で振り返っています。広島から発したオバマ大統領のスピーチは、歴史に残る内容のメッセージであったことは確かです。
